Knowle Village in Fareham began as Knowle Farm, recorded from the 17th century. In 1852, the site was transformed into Hampshire County Lunatic Asylum, later known as Knowle Hospital, which grew into one of the largest mental health institutions in southern England. After the hospital closed in 1996, the land was redeveloped, and by the early 2000s it became Knowle Village, a planned residential community retaining historic buildings such as the chapel and superintendent’s house. Today, it sits between Wickham, Funtley, and Fareham, blending heritage with modern village living.
